Virginia Building Code Official Certification
Virginia Certification Standards
Certification of Building Code Officials in Virginia is done by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).
Certification of Building Code Officials is a three step process, involving testing, attending the core module of the Code Academy, and applying to DHCD for certification. The is no legal obligation that an individual be employed by a jurisdiction to be certified as a Building Code Official.
Certified Building Code Officials must maintain their certification by attending all training sessions required by DHCD. Generally this involves attending special training sessions when there is a change in the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code or the model codes.
